Our Take

The Bar That Defined Modern American Cocktails

Death and Co opened on East 6th Street in 2007 and effectively defined the modern American cocktail era. The Cocktail Codex and Death and Co books, both authored here, became required reading for the global craft cocktail movement. The drinks created at this bar — the Naked and Famous, the Oaxaca Old Fashioned — entered the global cocktail vocabulary.

The cocktail menu rotates frequently and runs to over 50 drinks at any time. The bartenders are formally trained and the build is precise. The Oaxaca Old Fashioned is the right first order for any visitor — the bar invented it.

The crowd is mid-thirties cocktail enthusiasts and visiting bartenders. Pair with Attaboy on the LES for the complete East Village + LES cocktail evening.

What to Order
Oaxaca Old Fashioned
Reposado tequila, mezcal, agave, Angostura, orange peel. Phil Ward invented this here. The signature.
Naked and Famous
Mezcal, Yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, lime. Joaquín Simó created this here. Modern classic.
Old Fashioned
Bourbon, demerara, Angostura. The benchmark version, executed with precision.
Seasonal Cocktail
From the rotating menu. Always thoughtful, always grounded in classical technique.
