Our Take
Portland's Underground Masterpiece
Descend below the Ace Hotel and you find one of Portland's most singular drinking experiences. Pepe Le Moko occupies a basement that has been transformed into something closer to an Old Hollywood supper club than a Pacific Northwest cocktail bar. The ceiling is low, the booths are deep, the lighting is warm gold, and the music stays perfectly calibrated throughout the night. The whole room is a considered act.
The cocktail programme, developed with Portland's most serious bartenders, built its reputation on two things: impeccable classics executed without error, and a set of house originals that feel genuinely new. The Grasshopper variations have earned national attention. The brandy programme is deeper than almost any bar in the Pacific Northwest. The back bar is curated with the same eye that designed the room itself.
Pepe Le Moko sits comfortably alongside the broader Portland cocktail bar scene, which has produced some of the West Coast's most inventive programmes. It also makes natural sense as part of a longer evening that includes Portland's excellent hidden gem bars. For a date night in Portland, there is nowhere better to anchor the evening. What to Order
The Grasshopper
The house signature that put Pepe Le Moko on the national map. Creme de menthe, cacao, and cream, reconsidered with the precision of a cocktail bar that takes the format seriously.
Brandy Alexander
The bar's second signature. Aged cognac, dark cacao, and cream. A cocktail that falls away from most menus deserves a home this good.
Martinez
Old Tom gin, Carpano Antica, Maraschino, and orange bitters. The bar's treatment of the pre-Martini classic is textbook. Ask for it stirred long.
Bartender's Choice
Tell the bar team what you want: spirit, strength, style. They will build something for you. The team at Pepe Le Moko knows their cellar better than most chefs know their larder.
Best Time to Visit
Tuesday through Thursday offer the best balance of atmosphere and attention. The bar fills by 8pm on weekends and the wait for a booth can run 20 minutes. Reservations are strongly recommended for parties of three or more. The room is at its most cinematic between 9pm and midnight, when it settles into its rhythm. Arrive early if you want the corner booth, which is worth protecting.
Who It's For
Date nights, serious cocktail drinkers, and anyone who wants to understand why Portland's bar culture generates national attention. Pepe Le Moko is also an excellent first stop for visitors who want to be disoriented in the best possible way. The date night bar scene in Portland is broader than most cities its size, and Pepe Le Moko anchors it with authority.
