Blu Jaz Cafe

Live Music $$ ★ 4.5

Blu Jaz Cafe on Bali Lane is the longest-running live jazz venue in Singapore. The room has hosted local quartets, regional touring acts, and the occasional international name for well over a decade. The cocktail list is shorter than the music programme; the music programme is the point.

Three floors, each with its own personality. The ground floor is a casual cafe-bar with table seating. The first floor — the main jazz room — has a small stage, low ceilings, and an Asia-Pacific jazz line-up that runs seven nights a week. The top floor opens late on Fridays and Saturdays for funk and Latin sets that go past 1am.

Cover charges are modest and unusually transparent: typically S$10–S$25 depending on the act, with the cover going directly to the musicians. Drinks are accessible: solid house cocktails, a deeper-than-expected beer list, and a wine programme that has improved noticeably in the last two years. The kitchen does Middle Eastern small plates that pair well with whatever is on the stage.

Blu Jaz is the right call when you want music to be the centre of the evening and the drinks to be reliable rather than spotlight. Show up at the start of a set rather than partway through; the room is small enough that arrivals are visible.

Best time to visit: Weekday evenings before 9pm for the quieter version of the room; weekends after 9pm for the busier one. Reservations recommended where the bar accepts them.
