Our Take

A Surry Hills Cocktail Bar Built on the Old Wild Rover

The Rover sits at 75 Campbell Street in Surry Hills, on the corner site that locals knew for years as the Wild Rover. The Liquid and Larder group took the room over and reopened it as a polished neighbourhood cocktail and whiskey bar. Man of Many covered the relaunch and framed it as a New York style drinking room rather than the old Irish pub.

This is a sit and stay bar, not a pass through one. The happy hour from 4pm to 6pm pulls the after work crowd with specials on oysters, beer, wine and cocktails. If you want a thumping late night, look elsewhere on Crown Street. If you want a considered drink in a room with care behind the bar, The Rover is one of the suburb's most reliable picks.

The Room

The space carries the bones of the old corner pub, reworked with darker timber, low light and bar seating that rewards arriving early. The Urban List noted the rebuild leans on warmth rather than spectacle, so the focus stays on the glass in front of you and the conversation across the table.

The Drinks

The list runs classic forward with a whiskey backbone, and the happy hour is the smart entry point at A$22 a cocktail otherwise. Liquid and Larder built its name on bars like Baxter Inn, so the spirit depth here is real and the bartenders will steer you if you name a base and a mood.

Oysters anchor the food side and pair neatly with the early evening specials. Hospitality Magazine reported the group has tweaked the offering since opening, so check the current menu when you sit down rather than ordering from memory.

The Crowd

Expect an after work Surry Hills crowd from 5pm, with hospitality regulars filtering in later. The room stays conversational rather than loud, and weekends draw a pre dinner set before the Crown Street restaurants.
