Our Take on Hell Hunt
Pikk 39 has held the same pub since 1993, which makes Hell Hunt the first pub in independent Estonia, a history The Baltic Times has covered under the headline alive and barking. The name translates as the gentle wolf, not what English readers assume, and the room matches the translation.
House beer under the pub's own label costs 4.50 euros for 33cl and 5.50 for the half liter, per the official menu, with cocktails from 8.50 and a food list that runs from fried cheese balls to shepherd's pie.
In Your Pocket says it pulls in the locals by the droves with its no nonsense atmosphere, and in summer the operation doubles across the street, where the terrace in the park runs big, youthful, and always cheerful.
Reading the Room
Soft armchairs and sofas under old wood on the ground floor of a Pikk street merchant building. In Your Pocket calls it an open, comfortable drinking establishment with a strong sense of style, which regulars would shorten to: a proper pub.
A June 2026 In Your Pocket commenter notes it now reads more touristy than a few years back, the cost of being everyone's first recommendation.
The Menu, Edited

Who Shows Up, and When
Locals and tourists in shifting proportion, with the after work crowd holding the armchairs early and the terrace absorbing the summer overflow. Weekends fill the room; booking ahead saves the table.
Food serves late, until 1am by one regular's count, which makes Hell Hunt the Old Town's most reliable last kitchen.
The Word on the Street
- Probably the best pub in town, per Spotted by Locals.
- Great pub, wonderful staff and brilliant food, the deep fried cheese are seriously addictive, wrote an In Your Pocket commenter in June 2026.
- Good local place for a pint and very good pub food, per another June 2026 In Your Pocket comment.
- Tripadvisor holds it at 4.2 across more than 2,100 reviews, rare consistency for a thirty year old room.
Go, or Skip
- First time visitors who want Tallinn's definitive pub before any other
- Anyone eating late; the kitchen outlasts most of the Old Town
- Avoid if you want locals only; the word got out years ago
