San Diego earns its reputation as a laid-back city, but its bar scene is anything but passive. This is a city that pioneered the American craft beer revolution, that built speakeasy cocktail bars into converted warehouses in the Gaslamp Quarter, and that figured out rooftop terraces before rooftop terraces were a thing. Fourteen bars stand out in a city of good options. These are the ones our editors return to.

The San Diego bar guide covers more than 60 venues across 8 neighbourhoods. This article focuses on the 14 that define what drinking in San Diego actually means in 2025.

The Best Cocktail Bars in San Diego

"San Diego figured out that great cocktails and good weather belong together before anywhere else did."

The Best Craft Beer Bars in San Diego

San Diego launched the American craft beer movement. San Diego's craft beer bars are the most authentic expression of what the city does best. Ballast Point started here. Stone Brewing started nearby. This is where the concept of a San Diego IPA was born.

The Best After-Work Bars in San Diego

Where to Drink in San Diego: By Neighbourhood

Gaslamp Quarter is the densest concentration of bars in the city. Noble Experiment anchors it. The crowds are younger, the energy is higher, and closing time feels far away.

North Park is where San Diego's independent bar scene actually lives. Polite Provisions and Small Bar are both here. Walk along 30th Street on a Thursday and you will find 12 good reasons not to go home.

Little Italy runs from all-day wine bars to subterranean tiki rooms. Craft and Commerce and False Idol — accessed through the same building — represent the neighbourhood's best.

La Jolla sits north of the city proper but Raised by Wolves alone makes the drive worth it. This is where San Diego's most ambitious cocktail bar hides inside a bookshop.

Logan Heights remains authentic in a way that many neighbourhoods have stopped being. The Broken Record is the reason to go there.
