Door Knock hides in a Pitt Street basement behind a red door with a brass pineapple knocker, which is most of the fun before you are even inside. A 2025 redo gave it a Parisian look, marble tables and dim light made for leaning in close. The menu keeps nothing over twenty-eight dollars, so it punches above the price. Best for a second date that wants a secret.
Cantina OK! is a twenty-seat garage at the end of a CBD laneway, run by aproned barmen pouring rare agave and a Margarita named one of the best cocktails in the world. It is walk-in only, tight and loud in the best way, more shoulder-to-shoulder than candlelit. Best for a date that likes a bit of adventure and good mezcal. Get there early or wait on the lane.
Earl's Juke Joint sits behind a former butcher's front on King Street, a Newtown speakeasy that is walk-in only and proud of it. The cocktails are cheap for the quality, the playlist leans soul and funk, and happy hour runs five to seven. Best for an easy, unfussy date where you grab two stools and stay for one more. No bookings, so go early on a weeknight.
The Baxter Inn is a basement whisky bar down a back lane, all dark wood and a back wall stacked with hundreds of bottles on a ladder and rail. The staff know the list cold, so tell them what you like and let them pour. It is loud and busy, better for a date that talks over good drams than one that needs quiet. Get there early for a seat at the bar.
Shady Pines is a windowless Darlinghurst saloon done up like a Wild West basement, with taxidermy on the walls, whiskey on the back bar and country on the speakers. There is no phone and no booking, just a dark, warm room that makes a date feel like a hideout. Best on a weeknight before the crowd packs in. Order a whiskey and a beer back and settle in.
The Rover is a handsome two-floor Surry Hills bar from the Liquid and Larder group, pouring sharp cocktails alongside fresh oysters and a proper burger. The upstairs bistro turns a drink into a real dinner without much planning. Order half a dozen Sydney rock oysters and a Martini. Best early evening Tuesday to Saturday. A grown-up date that works whether you are eating or just drinking.
