Johannesburg

Six hidden bars worth your evening in Johannesburg

A working shortlist for the city that produced the highest-ranking sub-Saharan African cocktail bar in World's 50 Best history. Six rooms across Rosebank, Maboneng, Sandton, Braamfontein and Houghton — covering the seven deadly sins, a live jazz club, a two-menu speakeasy, a 22-floor rooftop and a library.

  1. No. 01

    Sin + Tax

    Rosebank · $$$

The bar that reached World's 50 Best No. 11 in 2019 — the highest a sub-Saharan African bar has ranked. Seven cocktails organised around the seven deadly sins; the Twelve-Hour clarified Negroni is the standing technical demonstration.

  2. No. 02

    The Marabi Club

    Maboneng · $$$

Basement jazz bar inside Hallmark House. Live sets two nights a week — Coltrane and Davis in the first set, Masekela and Ibrahim in the second. The Marabi Old Fashioned uses Amarula cream against bourbon and Angostura.

  3. No. 03

    Mootee Bar

    Sandton · $$$

Speakeasy hidden inside Marble Restaurant in Hyde Park. Two menus — the printed one available to all guests, the second handwritten one available on request after the bar has read you. The second menu is where mampoer and witblits show up.

  4. No. 04

    Randlords

    Braamfontein · $$$

The highest cocktail room in Johannesburg, on the 22nd floor of South Point Tower. The elevator ride up — past office tenants, past empty mid-rise floors, into a cinematic arrival — is part of the visit. Best at sunset; reservations enforced on weekends.

  5. No. 05

    The Stack

    Houghton · $$$

Library-themed cocktail bar above an Edwardian-era house on 4th Avenue. Cocktails catalogued in Dewey decimal — 641.872 BAR · PIN for the Pinotage Spritz, 641.875 BAR · ROO for the Rooibos Negroni. The Librarian's Choice is the bartender's pick from a literal book.

  6. No. 06

    The Living Room

    Maboneng · $$

Hallmark House rooftop, open since 2014 — the rooftop bar that has weathered Maboneng's full regeneration arc, from 2008 warehouse purchase through the 2019-2022 slowdown to the current steadier scene. Marabi Spritz, Cape brandy mules, sunset crowd.

Three of the six bars are decisively northern-suburb (Sin + Tax in Rosebank, Mootee in Sandton, The Stack in Houghton). Two are in the regenerated inner-city districts that began opening in the early 2010s (The Marabi Club and The Living Room, both in Maboneng). One is in the Braamfontein high-rise that has, since opening in 2009, been the city's standing rooftop view (Randlords). The right Johannesburg visit pairs at least one northern-suburb bar with one inner-city venue; the two halves of the city are different drinks scenes.

Two practical notes. Tipping is around 10%; service charges are sometimes added on a bill (look for the line). Most visitors in Johannesburg use Uber or a private driver for evening transport rather than walking between bars; this is the standard and not a sign that any specific area is unsafe. Reservations are increasingly necessary at the top-tier rooms; the others take walk-ins early in the evening.

A working editorial ranking. Three top-tier cocktail rooms, two rooftops, one jazz club. Pair northern-suburb with inner-city.
