The Best Airport Bars in New York

JFK has the best airport drinking in the United States, and it has it because of one specific intervention: the TWA Hotel, opened in 2019 inside Eero Saarinen's preserved 1962 TWA Flight Center. Inside the hotel sits a fully-restored Lockheed Constellation aircraft converted into a cocktail bar — the Connie. You walk up the airstairs, sit down inside the fuselage, and order a Manhattan. The drink is competent rather than world-class, but the room is unrepeatable. Nothing else at any American airport comes close. The TWA Hotel is technically pre-security but is connected to JFK Terminal 5 (JetBlue) by AirTrain in three minutes.

The cheat code at JFK is the TWA Hotel itself — the Sunken Lounge by the lobby, the Pool Bar on the rooftop in summer, both as good as any midrange Manhattan hotel bar and ten minutes from your gate. If you have an hour pre-airport, the Polo Bar at the Lowell or the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle is the right place to leave Manhattan from. The LIRR to Jamaica plus AirTrain to Terminal 4 takes 45 minutes from Penn Station. Plan accordingly.

Plays for JFK and LaGuardia: post-security, pre-security, lounges, and the airport-hotel cheat code.
