Our Take on Le Mal Nécessaire

If Montreal has a secret worth keeping, it lives in this basement on Saint-Laurent. Le Mal Nécessaire — the necessary evil — announces itself with nothing more than a neon sign half-hidden behind a Chinatown shopfront. Step through and you find one of the most carefully considered tiki bars outside of the American West: low ceilings hung with bamboo, shelves of obscure rum pressing against illuminated walls, and bartenders who approach tropical cocktails with the seriousness of a molecular kitchen.

The bar launched in 2015 and has never needed a publicist. Word of mouth sustains it. We recommend starting with something from their house lychee series before moving on to the rotating seasonal menu — a quarterly document that reads more like a research paper than a drinks list. The crowd skews creative and local: designers, restaurant workers, the people who know where the real bars are. We count Le Mal Nécessaire as one of the 12 best cocktail bars in Canada, full stop.

What to Order

Lychee Nectar

The house signature. Rum, lychee liqueur, fresh lime, and a float of coconut foam that arrives looking like a sunset through Venetian blinds.

Jungle Bird

The classic rendered with Venezuelan rum and housemade Campari-adjacent bitters. Bitter, tropical, deeply satisfying at any hour.

Seasonal Menu Pick

Ask the bartender what is new. The quarterly rotating cocktails are the reason regulars come back. Trust the recommendation.

Formosa Oolong Sour

For non-rum drinkers: gin, cold-brewed oolong, yuzu, and egg white. Light, aromatic, and completely unexpected in the best way.

Best Time to Visit

Weeknights between 7pm and 9pm for the calmest version of the bar. Friday and Saturday from midnight onward if you want the full late-night energy — the space hums when it is full.

Who It Is For

Serious cocktail drinkers, rum enthusiasts, couples on a date, and anyone tired of the predictable bar. Not ideal for large parties. Not the place to watch a game. Absolutely the place to disappear for three hours.
