What Strange Company Is
Strange Company sits at 5 Nairn Street, a short block off the Fremantle cappuccino strip. It opened in 2015 and remains the benchmark small bar in the port city.
The list reads by temperament, not spirit: fresh, fruity, esoteric, bold. Yelp reviewers call the format the easiest cocktail menu in Perth to actually order from.
Since August 2025 the room moonlights as Il Bruto, a daytime cafe, before the bar takes over at night, per Freoview.
Reading the Room
Timber, brass, and a long bar in a room that the WA Good Food Guide describes as timeless rather than themed.
It holds a crowd without feeling like one. The corner tables are the seats to claim.

Inside Strange Company

Who Shows Up, and When
Freo locals and industry people through the week; the weekend brings the East Fremantle and Perth crowd off the train.
Live jazz slots land on quiet nights. Midnight close holds seven days.
What Regulars Say
- Tripadvisor reviewers file it as the quintessential small bar: service, drinks, and design all named.
- Barstalker, a German cocktail blog, crossed the world and called it inviting, friendly, delicious.
- Yelp holds 19 written reviews, heavy on the cocktails and the staff's steering.
- The recurring tip: trust the bartender with the esoteric column rather than ordering safe.
Who It Is For
- The Fremantle night anchor; everything else in Freo orbits it.
- Cocktail drinkers who order by mood. The menu is built for exactly that.
- Avoid if you came for cheap pints and big screens. Wrong room, wrong street.
