Our Take on The Jug
· Casual The Jug Shop has been the Russian Hill wine merchant-and-bar since 1965 and quietly hosts one of the city's best retail-plus-corkage models — three thousand bottles on the shelves, drink any of them at the counter for fifteen dollars corkage, plus a daily-rotating eight-reference by-the-glass programme drawn from whatever the buyers were opening that week. The buying leans California with a serious natural-wine bench that has expanded materially since 2020 under wine director Ben Steele.
Service is determinedly casual. Ranks eighth because the format is intentionally hybrid and the by-the-glass programme is short, but as a retail-plus-bar model nothing else in SF matches the value.
