Marrakech

Bars in the Medina.

The old walled city is officially dry but the riad rooftops pour. Twelve rooms across the souks, Mellah and Kasbah quarters, from Cafe Arabe's terrace to Nomad's rooftop view of Place Rahba Kedima. The editor-ranked guide.

  1. 01

    12 bars, ranked.

Top four are the destinations. Middle five are the working rotation across the souks and Mellah. Bottom three are the late-night dinner rooms and a single dry institution worth seeing.

  2. 02

    Cafe Arabe

    Rooftop Bars

A converted riad on Rue el Mouassine with a rooftop terrace looking across to the Koutoubia. Three levels, full cocktail and wine list, an Italian menu in the courtyard below. The Cafe Arabe Mule at sunset is the order. Live oud Thursday through Sunday. Open every day.

  3. 03

    Nomad Marrakech

    Rooftop Bars

A modern Moroccan restaurant on Place Rahba Kedima with a small rooftop terrace overlooking the spice square. The wine list runs to 40 bottles from Meknes and the South of France. The Nomad Spritz on the rooftop at 6pm is the right call. Reservation strongly recommended.

  4. 04

    Riad El Fenn Rooftop

    Rooftop Bars

The rooftop of Vanessa Branson's Riad El Fenn, eight minutes from Jemaa el-Fnaa. Hotel guests only most of the year but the bar takes outside reservations for sunset cocktails. The El Fenn Negroni is the order. The view across the Medina to the High Atlas is the strongest argument.

  5. 05

    Le Salama

    Live Music

A three-floor restaurant and bar a 90-second walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa, with a colonial-era room and a rooftop terrace. The Salama Spritz is the standard. Live oud Wednesday through Saturday. The rooftop is the right seat. The kitchen runs Moroccan classics and the bar list is solid.

  6. 06

    L'Mida Marrakech

    Hidden Gems

A 20-seat rooftop in the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, with a Moroccan kitchen and a tight cocktail list built on Moroccan botanicals. The L'Mida Sour uses argan-infused gin. Book ahead. The room reads like a private courtyard and the call to prayer carries from three directions at sunset.

  7. 07

    Terrasse des Epices

    Rooftop Bars

A spice-souk rooftop with shaded canopies, a tight wine list, and a Moroccan kitchen for long sit-down lunches. The Terrasse Mojito is the easy entry. The two o'clock crowd is mostly tourists, the seven o'clock crowd is mostly French expats. Closes at 11pm. Cash easier than card.

  8. 08

    Kabana Rooftop

    Rooftop Bars

A rooftop bar a five-minute walk from the Jemaa el-Fnaa with a DJ programme from 8pm and live percussion four nights a week. The Kabana Mojito is the easy pour. Reservation helps at sunset. The view across the old city is the strongest argument for arriving early.

  9. 09

    Plus 61

    Cocktail Bars

A modern Australian-Moroccan restaurant in a converted Medina riad, with a serious cocktail bar and a 60-bottle wine list. The Plus 61 Negroni is the order. The kitchen runs late and the room is one of the few in the Medina built for couples rather than groups. Closed Sundays.

    Maison Arabe Piano Bar

    Cocktail Bars

The piano bar in La Maison Arabe, one of the oldest riad hotels in the Medina. Live piano from 7pm Wednesday through Sunday. Cocktail menu skews classic, the wine list runs deep. The Maison Martini is the order. Dress code leans smart. Reservation essential on weekends.

  11. 11

    Le Foundouk

    Cocktail Bars

A converted Medina foundouk turned French-Moroccan restaurant with a small but serious bar. The Foundouk Sour is the cocktail to start on. The rooftop seats 30 in summer. Closed Sundays. The right pre-show dinner room before walking to Cafe Arabe for the second drink.

  12. 12

    Le Jardin

    Hidden Gems

A courtyard garden restaurant tucked behind an unmarked door in the souks. Wine and small cocktail list. The Jardin Spritz is the standard at lunch. The room is green, shaded, and the right antidote to a long morning in the souks. Closes at 11pm. Cash preferred above 200 dirham.

  13. 13

    Dar Cherifa

    Hidden Gems

A 16th-century Medina riad turned literary cafe with Gnawa music on Friday nights and oud sessions on Sunday afternoons. There is no alcohol on the menu but the room is the reason to come. Mint tea, Moroccan pastries, a quiet courtyard. The right afternoon between two louder nights.
