Our Take
Athens Classical Cocktail Bar Standard
42 Bar opened in 2014 and has built itself into the Athens cocktail bar most committed to the classical canon. The room is small, low-lit, and built around a polished bar. The bartenders work in waistcoats and the drinks programme runs deep into stirred classics.
The Manhattan is benchmark. The Boulevardier is excellent. The seasonal menu runs to twelve cocktails, with classics always available. The whisky list is one of the deepest in Athens.
The crowd is mid-thirties to forties Athens professionals. Pair with The Clumsies or Baba Au Rum for a complete Athens cocktail evening.
What to Order
Manhattan
Bourbon or rye, sweet vermouth, Angostura. Stirred 60 seconds. The benchmark.
Boulevardier
Bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth. The whisky-forward Negroni cousin.
Sazerac
Sazerac Rye, absinthe rinse, Peychaud s, sugar. Served chilled, no ice.
