Athens

Six hidden bars worth your evening in Athens

A working shortlist that runs from a 1909 distillery to a 2014 World's 50 Best room. Six bars across Plaka, Monastiraki and Syntagma — and one rooftop where the Acropolis is the south-facing wall.

  1. No. 01

    The Clumsies

    Syntagma · $$$

Vassilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis's two-floor cocktail-bar-and-restaurant on Praxitelous. Opened in 2014 during the worst Greek hospitality moment in decades; reached World's 50 Best No. 7. The founding bar of modern Athens cocktail culture.

  2. No. 02

    Baba au Rum

    Monastiraki · $$$

Klitiou Street rum room since 2009 — 200 bottles from Caribbean to French agricole to Pacific, plus the bar's house Daiquiri built on a different rum each season. The oldest serious cocktail bar in Athens.

  3. No. 03

    42 Bar

    Syntagma · $$$

Below-ground vaulted-brick cocktail room on Kolokotroni 3. Marked at street level by a single marble plaque reading '42'. The descent is part of the visit; the Greek-spirit cocktail programme is the reason.

  4. No. 04

    Six d.o.g.s.

    Monastiraki · $$

Six operations at one Avramiotou address — café, cocktail bar, garden, gig venue, art gallery, late-night club. The transitions are the point. An entire Athens evening fits inside one entry charge.

  5. No. 05

    A for Athens

    Monastiraki · $$$

Rooftop bar at the A for Athens hotel on Miaouli 2 — the best rooftop view in central Athens, Acropolis directly south. Four cocktails named for the four directions visible from the bar. Reservation essential for sunset.

  6. No. 06

    Brettos

    Plaka · $$

Athens's oldest continuously operating distillery, on Kydathineon since 1909. The two-storey backlit wall of house-distilled ouzo, mastiha, tentura, tsipouro and fruit liqueurs is the photograph every Plaka visitor takes. Forty-five minutes is the visit.

  7. No. 07

    Black Duck Garden

    Athens · $$

Black Duck Garden is a Syntagma, Athens hidden gem garden bar. Hours, what to order, who it is for, and three nearby Athens rooms to follow.

  8. No. 08

    TAF The Art Foundation

    Athens · $$

TAF The Art Foundation is a Monastiraki, Athens hidden gem courtyard bar. Hours, what to order, who it is for, and three nearby Athens rooms.

The shortlist below crosses the full span of Athens drinking culture. Brettos has been distilling on Plaka since 1909; A for Athens is a rooftop view that older Athens could not have built; The Clumsies is the new cocktail-bar establishment; 42 Bar is the next-generation room that followed. Two of the six are tourist landmarks (Brettos, A for Athens) and worth the visit anyway; four are decisively local and on most international cocktail-bar pilgrimages.

A practical note. Athens summers are hot enough that walking between bars after 4pm is punishing; plan around the rooftop bars in the afternoon and the basement rooms after dark. Tipping is light (a euro or two on the bar), reservations are widely accepted, and most rooms run until 2am or later on weekends.

A working editorial ranking. Two World's 50 Best rooms, a 200-rum bar, a multi-space, a rooftop, and the 1909 distillery. Three for a single evening; all six for a long weekend.
