The most honest Austrian-and-Niederösterreich bench in Mitte, on a Berlin budget that still makes sense.
· Modern Wein-Salon on Tucholskystrasse is the Mitte room that has aged into a quiet institution over its fifteen years — small, plain, run by the same Austrian-trained team and stocked from a cellar that gravitates toward grüner veltliner, blaufränkisch and a small but committed Lower Austria bench. The list is shorter than VYNE's and the prices are about a third lower, which is the point: the room is built for serious drinking on a Berlin budget.
The kitchen does austere small plates that exist to clean the palate rather than to compete. Ranks seventh because the depth is narrower than the rooms above but no Mitte address offers more honest Austrian drinking per euro.
