A drinks list as a pun list
Bar Pun, Zhongshan
Bar Pun opened in Zhongshan in 2019 with a menu of cocktails whose names are deliberately, almost aggressively, puns on classic cocktails and Taiwanese cultural references. The bar treats the wordplay as the entry point — first you laugh, then you taste the drink, then you realise the pun is doing actual work in describing what is in the glass. The cocktails are technically excellent; the names are the thing the bar wants you to remember. Six current puns, decoded.
Mai Tai-peiThe opener · NT$420
A standard Mai Tai (white rum, dark rum, orange curaçao, orgeat, lime) with the addition of Taiwanese passion-fruit syrup. The pun is the obvious one but the drink is a properly considered local riff. Order this first.
Beetle JuiceThe contradiction · NT$450
Made with betel leaf — the Taiwanese chewing leaf that the bar reclaims as a cocktail ingredient. Gin, betel-leaf syrup, lime, soda. Faintly medicinal, vegetal, surprising. The bar's standing argument that Taiwanese betel culture deserves a serious cocktail context.
Long Time, No Sze-chuanThe bartender's joke · NT$480
A spicy Old Fashioned built on Kavalan whisky, Sichuan peppercorn-infused sugar, and Angostura bitters. The numbing-spice character lasts through the whole drink. The pun is on the absence of Sichuan in Taiwan; the drink imports the spice anyway.
Don't Go Bacon My HeartThe savoury one · NT$520
Bacon-fat-washed bourbon, maple syrup, lemon, dash of Angostura. A Whisky Sour with a savoury opening. The pun is on the Bee Gees; the drink owes more to American bar culture than Taiwanese, which the bar treats as part of the joke.
Tea-quila SunriseThe shape-shift · NT$480
Tequila, jasmine tea cordial, orange juice, grenadine. The standard sunrise, with the orange juice doing extra work to balance the floral tea. The pun is on Eagles song; the drink is the bar's entry-level tea cocktail.
Pisco InfernoThe closing track · NT$500
Pisco, lime, simple syrup, egg white, Tabasco. A Pisco Sour with a heat element. The pun is on the disco song; the drink is the right pour for the end of an evening when the rest of the bar has slowed down.
Bar Pun keeps the menu rotating; the six above are the standing winter menu, refreshed roughly every quarter. The bar's seriousness about cocktail-making is sometimes obscured by the lighter framing; do not let the pun-list put you off. The drinks are properly built. Open daily from 7pm to 2am; reservations recommended on weekends.
