Take a Negroni. Replace the gin with bourbon. That's the whole trick. What changes is everything: the drink loses its juniper backbone and gains caramel weight, the Campari becomes a foil rather than a co-lead, and the sweet vermouth — usually outvoted in a Negroni — gets to do real work. It's the same skeleton dressed in a heavier coat. Bourbon drinkers who claim never to have liked an Italian aperitivo cocktail are converted, regularly, by a properly built Boulevardier. Negroni drinkers tired of being asked to defend Campari order one as a sort of holiday.
An American writer named Erskine Gwynne invented it in Paris in the late 1920s. Gwynne owned a small expat magazine in Montparnasse called The Boulevardier — hence the drink, which Harry McElhone of Harry's New York Bar published in his 1927 cocktail book attributed to "Erskinne Gwynne, Esq." Like most Lost Generation cocktails it then disappeared for forty years, then re-emerged with the 2010s craft revival, and is now an unofficial test for any bar claiming to know the spirit-forward canon.
