The build is one of the most photographed equal-parts cocktails in the canon: gin, Cointreau, Lillet Blanc, fresh lemon juice, in equal measure, shaken, served up in a glass that has been rinsed with absinthe. The absinthe rinse is where the drink gets its character — too much and the cocktail tastes like cough syrup; too little and the absinthe ghost disappears entirely. The right amount is roughly five millilitres swirled and tipped out before straining, and watching a bartender judge that pour is one of the small pleasures of cocktail-bar tourism. There was a Corpse Reviver No. 1 (cognac, calvados, sweet vermouth) but it has not survived in popular use; the No. 2 is the famous one, despite the inconvenient name.
What follows: Craddock's exact 22:22:22:22 build (with notes on the absinthe rinse and the modern Lillet Blanc reformulation issue), the wider absinthe-ghost cocktail family, and 30 cities where the Corpse Reviver No. 2 is on the menu and the Lillet hasn't been sitting open for too long.
