The Margarita carries more bad reputation than any other cocktail, and almost none of it is the drink's fault. Pre-mix Margarita slush is a different drink entirely. The actual cocktail — three ingredients, fresh lime, real triple sec, decent tequila, no shortcuts — is one of the most balanced sours ever invented. The damage was done at chain Mexican restaurants in the 1990s and we are still, thirty years later, repairing the public's idea of what this drink is supposed to taste like.
Five different people have claimed to have invented the Margarita between 1936 and 1948, in three countries (Mexico, Texas, California), for at least four different women named some variation of Margaret. The earliest documented version is probably Carlos "Danny" Herrera's at Rancho La Gloria in Tijuana around 1938, but Hilton's house bartender at the Acapulco Hilton in 1948 has a reasonable claim too. The likely truth is that the Margarita is a variant of an older drink — the 1930s Tequila Daisy, with the orange liqueur swapped. Daisy in Spanish is Margarita.
