The Mint Julep is the only cocktail whose vessel is a load-bearing part of the recipe. The drink demands a sterling-silver or pewter cup, packed with crushed ice, stirred until frosted on the outside. The frost is not aesthetic — it tells you the cup is cold enough to keep the crushed ice from melting too quickly, which is what keeps the bourbon properly diluted. If the cup arrives at your hand without external condensation, the drink isn't ready. You can ask for it to go back. Most bars in the South would not be offended.
The earliest Mint Juleps were Virginia and Maryland farmer's drinks in the 1780s, often made with rum or peach brandy rather than bourbon. Henry Clay popularised the bourbon version when he was Speaker of the House in the 1830s. The Kentucky Derby adopted it as the official drink in 1938 and now serves about 120,000 of them across two days at Churchill Downs. The Derby version is, by reputation, mediocre — pre-mixed, served in plastic, garnished with a stem of mint that hasn't been bruised. The proper Julep is a different drink entirely.

- 60ml bourbon
- 8 mint leaves
- 15ml simple syrup
- Crushed ice
- Gently bruise mint with syrup. Add bourbon. Pack glass with crushed ice. Stir until frosted. Top with more crushed ice. Garnish with a tall mint sprig.
