Two pieces of bartending history are owed entirely to the Sherry Cobbler. It was the first cocktail to be routinely served with crushed ice, which was a 19th-century technological feat — large blocks shaved by hand, used the same day. And it was the first cocktail to be served with a drinking straw, because the crushed ice and citrus rinds made it impractical to drink without one. The straw and the crushed ice arrived together, in the late 1830s, in this drink. Charles Dickens reported being delighted by the Cobbler on his American tour in 1842, calling it "wonderful refreshment." Mark Twain claimed to drink them daily.
Then the Cobbler vanished. The temperance movement was unkind to it; Prohibition finished the job; the postwar cocktail era preferred shorter, harder drinks. From roughly 1920 to 2008 the Sherry Cobbler simply was not on bar menus. It came back around 2010 as part of the craft revival's interest in lower-ABV cocktails — bartenders rediscovered that fortified-wine cocktails could be both interesting and drinkable across an entire evening. The drink now occupies an awkward niche: too obscure to be popular, too good to disappear again.

- 75ml amontillado sherry
- 10ml simple syrup
- Orange slices, lemon slices
- Lightly muddle citrus with syrup. Add sherry. Pack glass with crushed ice. Stir. Top with more crushed ice. Mint and berries garnish.
